Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM)

Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM)

Introduction

ACM dynamically adjusts the modulation scheme and coding rate of a radio link in real-time based on current link conditions to maintain the best possible balance between link robustness and throughput.

How ACM Works on our radios

  • Link Monitoring: Our radios continuously monitor the quality of the wireless link, assessing factors like signal strength, interference, and error rates.

  • Dynamic Adjustment: When link conditions are optimal, the radio uses higher modulation schemes (e.g., 64-QAM or 256-QAM) that offer higher data rates but require better link quality. When link conditions degrade (e.g., due to weather, obstacles, or interference), the radio automatically switches to lower modulation schemes (e.g., QPSK or 16-QAM) that are more robust but offer lower data rates.

  • Coding Rate Adjustment: Along with modulation changes, ACM adjusts the coding rate, which involves changing the amount of error correction applied to the data. Higher coding rates reduce data rates but increase reliability.

Benefits of ACM

  • Increased Throughput: By using higher modulation schemes during good conditions, ACM maximizes the data throughput of the radio link.

  • Improved Link Reliability: During poor conditions, ACM enhances link reliability by switching to more robust modulation schemes and coding rates, reducing the likelihood of data loss or retransmissions.

  • Efficient Spectrum Utilization: ACM optimizes the use of available spectrum by dynamically adjusting to the best possible modulation scheme for current conditions, leading to more efficient use of bandwidth.

  • Reduced Operational Costs: Improved link reliability and throughput can reduce the need for additional infrastructure, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

  • Enhanced Quality of Service (QoS): By maintaining stable and reliable communication links, ACM helps ensure consistent quality of service for applications that rely on these wireless connections.

Summary

In summary, ACM provides a smart and adaptive approach to managing wireless communication links, ensuring high performance and reliability even in varying environmental conditions.

Pre-Order Checklist for Multiple Devices

Before you proceed with an order for multiple locations, we recommend following these essential steps:

  1. Access our 5G Service Availability Check to verify if your locations are eligible for 5G service.
  2. Input the addresses of all intended locations for device activation and use.
  3. Ensure each address qualifies for 5G service.
  4. Upon receiving your order, a Sales Engineer will contact you to collect the addresses for activation.

Note: If any address does not qualify for 5G, please do not place your order yet. Our Sales Engineers may still be able to qualify service using 4G/LTE.

We appreciate your partnership with CovertHart for your connectivity needs. Our team is dedicated to supporting your success every step of the way.
